may days in sydney

I’ll be back in Sydney this May for the following events at the Writers' Festival.

1. Poets Paint Words at the Wharf

Paintings from the Newcastle Region Art Gallery and the poems they inspired will be projected in the Heritage Pier Cafe during Sydney Writers’ Festival. The poets include Robert Adamson, Judith Beveridge, Judith Bishop, Michael Brennan, Luke Davies, Kate Fagan, Michael Farrell, Jane Gibian, Keri Glastonbury, Robert Gray, Martin Harrison, Ivy Ireland, Jill Jones, John Kinsella, Anthony Lawrence, Kate Lilley, Peter Minter, Les Murray, Dorothy Porter, Jaya Savige, John Tranter and Mark Tredinnick. Paintings from the Newcastle Region Art Gallery collection include Arthur Boyd, John Brack, Grace Cossington Smith, Grace Crowley, William Dobell, Margaret Olley, John Olsen, Gloria Petyarre, Imants Tillers, Albert Tucker, Brett Whiteley and Fred Williams.

Poets Paint Words is curated by Peter Minter and Lisa Slade, in conjunction with Sydney Writers’ Festival.

When: Thursday, May 21 2009, 10:30 - 13:30.
Where: Heritage Pier, Cafe Stage, Pier 2/3, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay.

2. Launch: Motherlode (Puncher and Wattman)

Motherlode, edited by poets Jennifer Harrison and Kate Waterhouse, is the first major collection of Australian women’s poetry in over a decade. It reads as a modern narrative rather than 160 individual poems, from poets including Judith Wright, Dorothy Hewitt, Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Judith Beveridge, Jan Owen and Bronwyn Lea. Hear 12 Sydney poets (and an Adelaide poet, me) read a contemporary story of identity - as and in relation to mothers, grandmothers, children and the world. Motherlode traverses nature, iconography, pregnancy, birth, childlessness, loss, daily grind, politics and ageing. Launched by noted academic Elizabeth Webby.

When: Thursday, May 21 2009, 16:00 - 18:00.
Where: Bangarra Theatre, Pier 4/5, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay.

3. DiVerse at the Margaret Olley: A Poetic Response

Eight talented and experienced poets from the group DiVerse respond to A Life’s Journey, an exhibition of Margaret Olley’s images at the SH Ervin gallery. The audience will receive chapbooks featuring the poems that will be read at the session. Members of DiVerse include Margaret Bradstock, Carolyne Bruyn, Marcelle Freiman, Jill Jones, Robert Kennedy, Paula McKay, Sheryl Persson and Louise Wakeling.

When: Sunday, May 24 2009, 15:00 - 16:00.
Where: S.H. Ervin Gallery, National Trust of Australia, Watson Road, Observatory Hill, The Rocks.
Cost: $7/$5 at the door. Includes Gallery entry.

And, in general, lots of poetry at the SWF. Here's a full list of poets taking part across many events.
